About Me
Growing up in Saskatchewan
Growing up in Saskatchewan, I was always in awe of the constantly-changing skies overhead. Not unlike the weather, they were always a point of discussion. And I remember often, while playing in my backyard or driving on the TransCanada Highway, seeing something COMPLETELY different in front of me than what was in the rear view mirror. Blue skies and sunshine ahead; dark, ominous clouds with a vibrant rainbow behind!
About Me
Career as an artist
It was under these evocative skies, in Moose Jaw, SK, that I grew up. My interests were varied but focused mostly on everything to do with the arts. I danced several times a week, sang in choirs, played the piano and competed in a variety of music and dance festivals. After spending a year at University, I shifted to Ontario where I completed the Musical Theatre program at Sheridan College (graduated 1998).
For the past two decades I have been working as a professional actor, singer and dancer with a seven-year stint at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON and three seasons at the Charlottetown Festival (along with many other professional TV/film/theatre credits). It was while performing in Hairspray (original Mirvish production here in Toronto, 2004) that I began to experience recurring neck pain and found myself visiting therapists A LOT! My curiosity about all things “anatomy” was peaked and I found myself asking many questions…a habit that is still going strong today.
When I first attended a few Pilates Mat classes, I found myself feeling underwhelmed and very confused. I didn’t understand the WHY of the exercises and just didn’t feel like they connected with me. I continued to find my physical “outlet” in dance classes and yoga – in tandem with dealing with recurring physical issues from the general “wear and tear” of being in the arts industry.
Pilates
Turned to Pilates
I turned to Pilates after the birth of my second child (as I was desperate to attempt to “restore my core”) and found the AHA moments that I had been longing for!! It was at Body Harmonics in Toronto where all of my movement dreams began to come true and I started connecting with my body in a way that I hadn’t before. I’ll never forget the euphoria of doing heel drops on the Reformer…I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Around this time, all of the pain that I had been experiencing started to disappear – and not come back. I was hooked.
